One of the most common problems that new dog owners face is teaching their pets not to bark at the wrong time. A bark shock collar is a good solution to the barking problem, but a lot of people object to them because the word “shock” brings them an image of electrocution.

Dog owners have to realize that dogs understand things like “punishment” or “reward” in a different way that humans do. Dogs don’t have a good sense of the future and they live mostly in the present, so unless you correct them at the very moment they do something bad, they won’t understand your actions. That word ‘punish’ is something else that new owners take offence at but they do not realise that a dog can be very seriously ‘punished’ simply by the tone of the owners’ voice. For example, scolding the dog or shouting at it for several minutes might make the dog miss the link between the bad behavior and the scolding.

So why Does a Bark Shock Collar Work?

A dog bark shock collar delivers a calculated static discharge when barking is occurring. The mild shock is a punishment delivered by the bark shock collar at exactly the right time for the dog to associate one with the other. Once the dog makes the link between barking and punishment, it learns to stop the former to avoid the later. The dog is never really hurt or in pain by the shock; it’s actually the confusion that makes it stop barking while it tries to figure out what happened.

Trainers agree that shock collars aren’t cruel, but helpful when trying to teach your dog to behave; and with time, the dog learns to avoid the shock completely.

Since the objective is to stop only inconvenient barking, a dog bark shock collar shouldn’t be used more than 30 minutes a day, and only in situations where barking is inconvenient. Dogs will eventually learn the difference between allowed barking and “bad” barking, and stop the bad one. If you simply follow the collar’s instructions that come with it, you’ll teach your dog not to bark unnecessarily in no time, and your neighbors will thank you for it.
