Tips On How To Stop Dogs Whining.
Posted Under: Uncategorized
If you want to stop your dog from whining, you’ll need to get an understanding of what is causing it in the first place.
A dog will whine as a way of expressing his emotional state to us, to let us know that he is happy, sad, anxious, in pain, etc..You mustn’t punish your dog for showing his feelings, but rather show him the way in which you would like him to behave in a given situation. All dogs can be taught to stop whining if they are shown in a consistent manner what is expected of them.

First of all you’ll have to stop rewarding him with attention when his whining begins. For example, your dog may whine from excitement when he sees you preparing for his morning walk. By hastily getting him on the leash and out of the door to stop his whining, what you’re actually showing the dog is that whining is a quick route to being taken on a walk! Instead, what you should do is praise your dog for calm, quiet obedient behaviour.
Why not give this a try instead…
Command your dog to ‘Lie Down’ or ‘Sit’, and wait for him to do as you have asked. If the whining doesn’t stop, firmly command him to be “quiet” or say “no”. Say the command once only, and then wait for him do as you have asked.Avoid eye contact with your dog until he obeys your command to be quiet.
If after ten seconds or so, he still has not behaved as you have asked him to, then leave the situation and start another task without him – the idea is to show him that he has been unsuccessful in trying to control your actions <with his whining behaviour.

Continue to repeat these steps until he obeys your command to stay quiet and calm.
Give your dog lots and lots of praise in an upbeat tone of voice when he gets it right – he will be motivated to get this reward again the next time you go over the process. It may take a few attempts before he works out what he needs to do, but if you stay consistent with your message, he will eventually work out which behaviour to adopt when its time for a walk, and most importantly he’ll see that whining no longer achieves a positive outcome.
This method can be used for trying to stop dogs whining before feeding, whilst on a car journey, or in fact for any other bouts of whining that are due to excitement.
