Stay Command Border Collie Training

Intelligence is not an excuse for border collies not to get proper border collie training. In fact, training this breed is a necessity so that it will be less difficult to control them should any untoward event arises.
One lesson you should teach your border collie is the stay command. While some dog trainers believe that stay is an unnecessary command, it is still important that your pet knows how to respond to it to ensure his safety even if he is a few meters far from you. So long as he’s reliably trained with the command, telling him to “stay” can prevent him from chasing after a vehicle, crossing a chaotic street, lunging at your guests and plenty of other unwanted behaviors that can be dangerous for him and anyone around.
Training your pet to stay is simpler achieved when he is reliably trained with the command sit or down. Place him in the position you prefer him to stay, be it sit or down. If he remains in the position for a few seconds, praise and reward him with a treat. It would be fine if your pet moves away soon after the reward is given since the procedure is finished.
The same as training other breed of dogs, border collie training is accomplished by repetition. Repeat the process but this time, increase the duration before giving of praise and reward. If your dog moves away before the process is over, correct him with a “no”. Do not give a reward.
Once your puppy understands how the behavior works, add the verbal command. Place him in the position you would like him to stay and say “stay” while holding your hand out, palm facing out. Praise and reward him if he stays for a few seconds. Gradually increase the time of him staying in the position as well as the distance between you and your dog.
Practicing the command anytime during the day is recommended.
