Did you know that howling is just another form of communication for dogs, like barking? If a dog lets out a howl, there is always a good reason for it. If your dog has a problem with too much howling, it can be a real problem to everyone around, even your family and neighborhood.

What can you do to stop dog howling or at least to cut back on inappropriate dog howling? First, you need to understand why dogs do this. It goes back to wolves and coyotes and the undomesticated dog who would howl as a way to signal to other dogs that they are there. Often this is done to signal far away.

Your domesticated dog could be lonely or bored when he does it today. Sometimes it is in response to another dog that they heard howling and sometimes it can be in response to sirens, noise from a television or other high pitched sounds. Even something like a clarinet or a flute can set your dog into a howling mode.

This is an instinctive response for dogs so they do it without thinking. It’s not something they do because the sounds hurts their ears or bothers them. It can be a response to another howl that’s coming their way. When trying to stop dog howling you might:

· Distract him from whatever set off the howling

· Find something else for him to do (maybe he is just bored)

· Tell him you’ve heard his warning howl (saying “okay now” or “enough”)

· Comfort your dog if he is frightened

These tips will help you stop dog howling and deal with excessive howling and whining. When you train your dog to get rid of the howling problem it also helps you form a closer bond with one another. Your relationship will grow stronger, there will be more trust between you both and you will be better equipped to handle any other types of behavior problems that come along as well.

Here are some things to stay away from:

· Never yell or shout at your dog

· Don’t howl back at your dog

· Don’t hit your dog or get physical with him

· Don’t hold your dog’s mouth shut

· Don’t use shock collars

Any of these things can just make the dog howling problem worse. If you want to stop dog howling, you need to understand why your dog is doing it and what you can do to help stop it. If your dog feels afraid, bored, lonely or insecure, these are things you can help control.

With proper training and special time spent together, you can teach your dog to feel more comfortable in his surroundings and not to howl like this. This will be great for you, your dog, your family and the entire neighborhood.
