The one dog that has the potential to do just about anything is the German Shepherd.  A properly trained and correctly bred German Shepherd dog could turn out to be the type of dog that dreams are made of, they can be; a wonderful family pet, a highly trained obedience dog, they keep you from harm while you are sleeping and they are pretty to look at.  All around working skills is what this breed of dog was designed for.  German Shepherd dog training will be the glue that holds the pieces together.

Tips for Training Your German Shepherd

The teaching process can begin with these noble dogs at around seven weeks old.  By this age the pups’ brain is able to take in some of the simple commands, their bodies are going to take quite a bit longer to catch up though.  You need to teach your puppy games that he will play for the rest of his life.

Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise because this will help improve him both mentally and physically.  It’s enjoyable to teach tricks and fun, too.  Your dog will be more self assured with more learning.  Learning new commands and signals can be helpful later in his teaching sessions.  Offer your dog treats while teaching tricks.  When the puppy is older, he will love doing tricks for praise.

German Shepherd training is best done with positive methods.  The positive training method doesn’t involve any kind of punishmet.  Positive reinforcements are used in positive training to reach the desired behavior.  Using positive training doesn’t allow your dog to do whatever it wants to do.  They must show proper behavior to get the reward.  Positive training produces a dog that is happy and eager.  Trust is one of the ways a dog will obey.  You and your dog will become a team.

Leash Training

Walking a dog on a leash, in the beginning, your dog might want to carry the leash in their mouth.  Carrying the leash is permitted for awhile, but they aren’t allow to chew on the leash.  While holding the leash in your left hand, keep the dog to your left side.  The dog should always be trained with short lessons.  The dog could take several lessons before figuring things out.

The Sit and The Down

Teaching sit to a dog.  When teaching the sit it’s best to use treats.  The treat is held in front of the dog’s nose, then lift it up and back.  This helps the dog fold his legs under him. Always repeat the word “sit’ while lifting the treat up.  Reward him with a treat, after he sits.

You start in the sit position, when teaching the down.  Slowly move the treat down and forward in front of the dog.  This will lower his front legs. Don’t forget to say “down”, while lowering the treat.  Don’t forget to reward the dog and praise him after he lays down.

In Closing

German Shepherd dogs careers have been ruined by bad training or no training at all. It’s an exciting and enjoyable experience to train these dogs.  Living with a well trained German shepherd dog is a trip of a life time.
