Don’t get too excited with Fido as soon as you get home from the pet store it’s best to save the neat dog tricks until after you complete some dog obedience training.  Just as a child has to learn new words and a whole new vocabulary, start with simple one word commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘heel’.Expecting only the basics at the beginning causes the dog to respond to communication in general and to respond to your commands as his master.Relatively quickly your dog will obey your basic commands through instinct.

A puppy does not have the ability to be a Masters Degree student at obeying commands, so don’t crush your puppy with too many commands. If you are overly dominating when teaching your puppy, you risk alienating him and losing his trust in you as a good master.  Use lots of love and rewards when your dog completes some basic dog training. If you only use fear to teach your dog, he will be frightened to perform and may perform his tricks worse due to “stage-fright”.

The methods of rewarding a dog and keeping him on a figurative leash are used to train puppies.A dog may learn faster when given treats and food, but in the long run this may not be the most effective method to train a dog.  They may grow to expect the chewy bone after every single ‘roll over’ trick or simple ‘sit’ command.

Some feel the military means is more effective than the gentle method of offering a treat for a reward. Those who support military means use the leash method, which uses fear and authority to compel a dog to perform tricks without growing accustomed to rewards

However, using the leash method is not always successful.Keep in mind that the ultimate goal of training is to have the dog always obey with or without punishment or reward. The goal sets out your objective to have your dog obey, and when the dog is aware of this he will enter into a better bond with you.

Whatever method you choose, dog obedience training ensures the dog executes your commands positively rather than running rampant with no routine training. To your benefit, dog obedience training results in an obedient dog who can be your best friend, and who can entertain your friends with tricks.
